The multi-racial and multi-ethnic characters and realistic city street setting was controversial, particularly in the Deep South.

Kermit the Frog sings “It’s Not Easy Being Green” with Lena Horne, a Black jazz singer and civil rights activist. It’s a song about race, but also just a song about being a green Muppet.
