There is apparently some discussion of doing away with restaurant tipping post-pandemic. Just pay servers a decent wage. I say yes yes OMG yes.

Discussing this subject with a friend online just now, it occurred to me that I routinely tip 20% for table service and delivery, 10% for take-out. Nearly always. 99% of the time. I do it thoughtlessly, and I use the calculator app on my phone to figure it out.

Service has to be extraordinarily great or extraordinarily bad for me to deviate from that formula.

So, eliminating tipping–and increasing server wages–would be the right thing to do, but it would also make my life more convenient. Because tipping is, for me, entirely busywork.
