Zappos boss Hsieh was a rare entreprenur who didn’t just make money – he changed the world and was widely loved. But he struggled with addiction and loneliness his whole life, and those struggles were exacerbated by the COVID crisis.

The singer Jewel tried to intervene, writing him in a letter: "When you look around and realize that every single person around you is on your payroll, then you are in trouble."

Zappos was brilliant because it made no sense. It seemed obvious, at the time, that nobody was going to ever buy shoes over the Internet. Or at least, thats’ what I thought. That was wrong. Now, every pair of shoes I own I bought at Zappos.
