I’m getting a stream of puzzling unsubscribes from my daily newsletter. They’ve been coming in several times a week for the past couple of weeks, which is a lot considering the newsletter itself has fewer than 100 subscribers.

The addresses look legit but the first name and last name are random characters, like this: “nXVIPqrUQCJwo.” This is the kind of thing you expect if someone’s trying to sidestep requirements to give a name. But I don’t require people to give their names to sign up.

I suspect a spam attack of some kind. But I can’t figure out how that would work.

I just checked MailChimp. Seems like about half of my list subscribers have random strings of characters for first and last names.

Can anybody explain this?

By the way, if you want to sign up for my daily newsletter, you can do so at this page. The newsletter is a daily compilation of my posts here.
