Trump’s support is to a large extent about performative masculinity. It’s about pretending to be macho without actually being tough.
I respect the macho tradition. Bullfighting, hunting, going to war, brawling. The tradition of Theodore Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway.
But Trump and his supporters do none of those things. Instead they bluster and yell.
Like many people, I’ve been puzzled by the MAGA refusal to wear masks. The answer is obvious now: They think wearing a mask makes them look weak.
