The Disorderly Contested Election That Changed American History – The 2020 election could look a lot like the election of 1876, in which neither party conceded at first. Eventually, the Republicans and Democrats brokered a deal in which the Democrats conceded the election and, in return, the Republicans essentially conceded Reconstruction. The Republicans agreed to remove federal troops from the South, beginning nearly a century of cruel Jim Crow segregation.

From here in 2020, it looks like 1876, rather than 1865, was the year the Civil War ended and the South won. In retrospect, every Confederate general and leader who got a statue erected to honor him should have instead ended his life dangling from a rope.
