More than a dozen Black Americans, many born into slavery, were elected to US Congress during the 1870s. The period ended too fast.

Robert Smalls was an authentic badass and American hero. He escaped from slavery in the South, stole a heavily armed Confederate warship, became a captain for the Union and later, one of those Black Congressman.

Are there statues to Smalls? Towns and schools named after him? Where’s the HBO mini-series?
